Preparation for beard& moustache transplant on scar

Before beard transplant, there will be different care procedures compared to hair transplant to increase the chances of graft survival to 70-80%. This involves enhancing blood supply to the scar area, making it more conducive for grafting. Therefore, it is necessary to soften and thin the scar by using micro needling, which stimulates collagen production, or injecting steroids into the scar to make it softer and thinner. This may need to be done approximately 2-4 times before beard transplant. Once the scar is well-prepared for beard transplant, there will be an assessment of the number of grafts, typically averaging around 500 grafts(FUG) by using follicular unit extraction (FUE) and hair grafts from the back of the head, they are transplanted to the beard area. At Dr. Gorn Hair Clinic, the special technique used for beard transplantation aims to achieve a natural appearance. They focus on using small hair grafts for beard transplantation, selecting grafts with single hair follicles to mimic the most natural appearance. These are then arranged in the same direction as the natural growth pattern of the original beard, resulting in a natural outcome.

The procedures for Beard and Moustache Transplant

  1. It typically begins with assessing the number of grafts needed. Generally, beard transplantation requires around 500 grafts. (FUG)
  2. Preparing the donor area at the back of the scalp for hair follicle extraction takes approximately 1-2 hours.
  3. After extracting the hair follicles, there will be a process of trimming and selecting the most viable grafts.
  4. The trimmed hair follicles are then nourished in a specialized growth solution, enhancing their nutritional intake and increasing the chances of successful graft implantation.
  5. Subsequently, a local anesthetic will be administered before the grafts are implanted into the beard area. During the implantation, the grafts will be arranged in a natural direction and angle, mimicking the natural growth pattern as much as possible. This process typically takes about 1-2 hours.

Post- beard and moustache transplant care

  1. Recommendations for consuming soft, easy-to-chew food to reduce muscle movement around the mouth
  2. It is recommended to use mouthwash instead of brushing teeth for the first 3 days. You can then start brushing gently after the initial 3 days.
  3. After beard transplantation, within the first 3 days, it is recommended to come to the clinic for cleaning
  4. On day four, you can start using baby shampoo to clean by gently tapping the foam onto the area, then gently rinse with water from showerhead, passing it lightly and patting dry gently.
  5. Do not rub vigorously or scratch, under any circumstances.
  6. Recommend sleeping on your back with a neck pillow for up to 7 days, as sleeping on your side may cause the graft to detach.
  7. After completing one week, you can start rubbing gently. If there are white flakes, it is recommended to use pure coconut oil or baby oil. Soak for about 30 minutes and then use gentle baby shampoo to rinse out.
  8. During the 2nd week to a month, all hair strands may fall out, but the hair roots remain embedded under the skin. Afterward, new hair will begin to grow within 4 months.

Due to the nature of beard transplant on scar, there is a chance of graft survival of approximately 70-80%, which is lower than the 90% chance in regular hair transplant. Therefore, at Dr. Gorn Hair Clinic , emphasis on increasing the graft survival rate. Additional programs include:

  • Preparing the scar before beard transplant.
  • When extracting hair follicles, a globally standardized cell-nourishing solution will be used
  • Autologous Hair Cell Growth Factor is used for post-beard transplant nourishment injections
  • Light therapy to stimulate hair follicle activity.

All of these techniques are aimed at maximizing graft survival chances.

Advice and essential information for beard& moustache transplant on scar

  • In cases where the scar is relatively wide, surgical intervention may be necessary to reduce its size before beard &moustache transplant on scar.
  • In cases where the scar is relatively thick due to the deep embedding of hair follicles into the skin by 3-5 mm, the area to be transplanted should ideally have flexible tissue to ensure the survival of hair follicles. However, if the scar area is thick and rigid, it may pose a challenge for blood vessels to nourish the hair roots effectively.
  • For deep wounds with irregular scar tissue formation, it is advisable to inject fat into the wound area. Fat injection helps make the scar tissue more plump and smooth, preparing it for beard transplant. Additionally, fat injections soften the wound, reduce its hardness, and promote collagen production.
